ExpandCarmen ( presented by Lyric Opera Virginia )
May 4, 2012, 8 p.m.;  May 6, 2012, 2:30 p.m.
To close the season, Lyric Opera Virginia has created one of the most unique and innovative formats in the field of opera to support its mission and thrill its audiences. Lyric Opera Virginia will present a “Jewel Box” production of Bizet’s Carmen. Jewel Box Opera is a shorter, more compact alternative to a fully produced, lengthy opera production. This Jewel Box opera production of Carmen will be a fully theatrical 90-minute alternative to the original version, complete with costumes, lighting and all the musical jewels for which the opera is known. The starring role of the Spanish gypsy Carmen will be performed by the mesmerizing and evocative Polish mezzo-soprano Magdalena Wor. Known for her rich, seductive mezzo sound perfectly suited to the role of Carmen, Ms. Wor received high acclaim by Virginia audiences as Suzuki in last season’s production of Madame Butterfly. Maestro Peter Mark conducts. Performed in French with English supertitles. For ticket information, visit www.lyricoperavirginia.org or contact lyricoperavirginia@gmail.com.
